The Delhi traffic police recently wrote to DTC chairman Rajeev Verma, requesting him to follow the Delhi Metro’s model and provide real-time information to commuters on the arrival of buses. This system, police said, will improve the traffic situation in areas close to the bus stops.

“We suggested that DTC provides such a facility as all its buses are being installed with GPS,” said Anil Shukla, additional commissioner of police (traffic).

“We received a letter from the traffic police, asking us to identify certain routes and provide information to passengers on bus arrivals. We hope to start the service within a month at 252 bus stops. Of these, 162 are in NDMC areas and the remaining on the BRT corridor. Prior to this, we will have to rationalise the movement of buses,” said a DTC official.

There are nearly 500 bus stops across the national capital.

Sources said the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Ltd (DIMTS), with help from a transport consultancy firm, is in the process of storing data on movement of DTC buses on the PIS server. The PIS boards - installed before the Commonwealth Games - presently provide similar information to the commuters on cluster buses, which are run by DIMTS.

Keeping in view women’s safety on city roads after dusk, the traffic police have asked the DTC to ensure that all the bus stops are adequately lit. A large number of bus queue shelters and stops are without sufficient lighting facility, police sources said.
