Stray cattle nuisance: MCD, cops pass buck
One person may have been killed and three others injured by a stray cow in the Capital, but the MCD is busy passing the buck. The civic body has claimed that owing to non-cooperation from the Delhi Police, MCD has not been able to round up cattle in the city.
“We are not getting full co-operation from the Delhi police and this has affected our drive. Our staff needs to be provided security when they are in the field,” said Vijendra Gupta, Chairman of MCD’s Standing Committee.
The civic body’s plan to seek the help of Tamil Nadu force to provide security to their staff will also not take off. “We had planned to take the help of the Tamil Nadu force but that request has been rejected by the Home ministry,” added Gupta.
The Delhi Police, however, had a different tale to tell. “Whenever the MCD has requested us for security we have provided if it has been feasible. But there are other consideration for us too, and providing security for all their raids is not possible”, said Rajan Bhagat, Spokesman, Delhi Police.
Even as the last date for ridding the Capital of stray cattle is drawing near, the civic body has not made much progress. According to the MCD Commissioner, the drive to round off the cattle will be completed by August. “After August, Delhiites will not see any stray cattle on the streets. Our cattle catching drive has been progressing very well but we are facing resistance from cattle owners,” said KS Mehra, MCD Commissioner.
