“The present system is good, but it is being slightly misused. I don’t think there is any need for a change in the pattern, but if the government has proposed it, it must have something in mind,” said Arpit Agrawal, topper of IIT-JEE 2012.

Bilaspur’s Nishanth Koushik, who got an overall rank three, however, is more vocal against the proposal for change.

“What is the need to have a common engineering exam. The more the number of exams, the greater the chances of selection. What if you are unable to perform well on that day, then you lose out on all colleges,” said Koushik, adding, “The boards should not be neglected, but giving 40% weightage to board marks for JEE selection is also not required.”

And it is not just the students who are against the idea. The IIT faculty has also protested against any move of the government to change the pattern of the exam.

A 30-minute video uploaded on You Tube by Prof Sanjeev Sanghi, president, Faculty Forum, IIT-Delhi, talks about the conceptual and technical flaws in the proposed changes, and possible solutions.

“The basic objectives behind the change is to take down the need for coaching and stress in students. I don’t see how this will do that,” said Sanghi.
