The accused, Akshansh Singh and Shuarya Kumar, share a rented accommodation in Gujranwala town near Delhi University. While Akshansh has done his Bachelors in Business Administration (BBA), Shaurya is pursuing BSc through correspondence.

Akshansh even scored a decent percentile in the Central Admission Test (CAT) and received calls from various B-Schools. But he chose a shortcut to success. Police said the two men roped in an official of an engineering institute in Rohini and duped students seeking seats in the institute.

Their modus operandi was simple – they would contact students seeking admission to the college and “promise that if they pay Rs 7 lakh, their admission would be ensured”, said a senior police officer.

Printers and scanners seized from their residence showed that they even used to prepare fake admission slips. But after extracting the money, “the accused would go underground. We laid a trap last week and arrested Shaurya when he came to collect payment from a candidate,” said the police officer.

While Akshansh was arrested from his native place in Bihar, the police are looking for their other associate, Vikram Singh, who is allegedly the mastermind behind the racket. “It was Vikram who had introduced them to the crime. The duo then started their own business,” he said. The police had received four complaints against the duo before arresting them. The accused are now in police remand.
