In both the previous appointments — Ranjan Mathai and Nirupama Rao — the same criteria was followed.

Singh, a 1976 batch Indian foreign service officer, will assume office on August 1 and will have a two-year tenure. After Chokila Iyer and Rao, she will be the third woman foreign secretary of the country.

Singh, 59 is daughter of TV Rajeshwar, the former Intelligence Bureau Chief and former governor of Uttar Pradesh.

The Indian ambassador to China, S Jaishankar, who is a batch junior to Singh, was the other main contender for the post.
