The exercise is likely to be completed before the All India Congress Committee (AICC) session in Delhi on November 2. As part of the process, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday discussed the issue of appointing a new Maharashtra Congress chief with senior leaders A.K. Antony, Oscar Fernandes and her political secretary Ahmed Patel.

The meeting took place in the light of Maharashtra Congress, authorising her to nominate the new PCC chief. Gandhi is engaged in the process of deciding the new state unit chiefs following her re-election as the Congress president recently.

The meeting assumes significance against the backdrop of a controversy involving PCC chief Manikrao Thakre over collection of funds from Congress Ministers in Maharashtra for Sonia’s rally in Sewagram on Friday.
