Seventy-one countries, over 6,500 official visitors, athletes and other delegates, a potential hundred thousand tourists, and the costliest ever civic makeover.
Exactly a year from today, when the sun rises on the 19th Commonwealth Games, you will awake to a Delhi, which is safer, more beautiful and more global.
The Games — the largest sporting extravaganza in the country till now — will offer Delhi the opportunity to add a new
volume in her 2,000-year-old history.
With 21 new roads and 61 flyovers, travelling in the capital is expected to become a smooth affair.
Also coming up is a 190-km metro line covering the entire city as well as the suburban towns of Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Noida.
The express line will transport you from the city centre to the airport in 18 minutes flat. Even the airport is getting a swank makeover.
Also in the pipeline are: a brand new railway station in east Delhi and the city’s tallest building at Minto Road. Add to it the 10,000 buses and radio taxis that will help you keep mobile.
For tourists, over 10,000 hotel rooms and a host of bed-and-breakfast arrangements are coming up in the city before the Games.
This is the second makeover for the city after the 9th Asian Games that was held in 1982.
