The Gurgaon police arrested an MBA final year student from Ambience Mall where he was shopping with a cloned credit card. Two of his accomplices who were waiting for him elsewhere in the mall managed to give the police the slip.

Police have recovered a stolen Hyundai Santro car from the mall and the cloning paraphenalia from his Karol Bagh outfit, which included the Credit Card Reader/Writer and a computer in which he had already downloaded data from 32 credit cards. The gang was about to use this information.

The police have also arrested a courier delivery boy with whom the gang had colluded and would pay him Rs 2,500 for each card before it was delivered to the consignee. A Gurgaon court on Monday remanded the two to judicial custody.

The arrested MBA student had reportedly worked with a call centre till January as technical assistant and after leaving the firm, he happened to meet a professional credit card fraud gang.

The gang had bought Credit Card Reader/ Writer online from a Chinese company for Rs 4,500 and it was delivered by a multinational courier company at their Delhi address. The mastermind and his accomplices have been identified as Shoaib and Tanzeem who lived in Batla House in Delhi and Bareilly in UP, respectively.

Gurgaon police commissioner SS Dewal said the Big Bazaar officials informed the police that someone by the name of Farhaaz Ahmad was trying to make a purchase with an SBI Credit card that delivered details of Kotak Mahindra bank account after swiping. This led to Ahmad’s arrest.

“During interrogation, Ahmad disclosed that he had teamed up with two other credit card frauds Shoaib and Tanzeem and had lured a courier delivery boy Sanjiv Kumar into handing over credit cards before delivery to the consignees for Rs 2,500 for each card. He would take about 15-20 minutes to swipe and download the card data with the Credit Card Reader/Writer at their Karol Bagh rented house and return the card,” he said.

Deswal said Ahmad disclosed that he had got into this ‘trade’ about two months back after leaving his job at IBM Daksh. “He is a final semester MBA student of a private management institution in Noida and belongs to Meerut. Ahmad said he had cloned and used three credit cards and made purchases of about Rs 2 lakh that included three gold coins worth Rs 48,000.”
