Unidentified men broke into a high-security American embassy office in south Delhi on Tuesday morning. The incident came to light when the lock of the central room was found broken. When officials went inside, they found everything scattered. The office is located in C 30, Gulmohar Park.

Police said the complex is well guarded with a posse of private security guards deployed by the embassy. Local police and the PCR also closely coordinate with US officials.

What has bewildered the police is the fact that the break-in took place in the central room. “It’s not clear how the men entered the complex without being noticed, reached the central room, broke the lock and searched the place and decamped with whatever they could. We still don’t know what has been taken away and if the accused was looking for something specific,” a senior police officer said.

“We have found Blackberry phones and digital cameras missing. A list of all that is missing is being compiled. Officials have reported that cash was also kept in the central room, which has also been found missing,” the officer said.

An employee, James, informed the police about the break-in. “Officers from the local police immediately reached the place. They have spoken to James and other officials and taken down their statements. We have examined the place but it is too early to say anything. However, inside involvement cannot be ruled out,” the officer said.

A case of burglary has been registered.
