Sanjeev Kumar, a cooking oil merchant, was critically injured but he single-handedly fought off the three goons on a motorcycle, near the high security Raj Niwas Marg in north Delhi on Wednesday night.

Police said the forty-year-old was on his way home from his shop in Lahori Gate area on his scooter. He was carrying Rs 1.5 lakh when he was waylaid in Civil Lines area around 9 p.m.

“Three men on a single motorcycle, who had been following Kumar, suddenly stopped him and threatened him with dire consequences if he didn't hand over his bag,” said Sagarpreet Hooda, Deputy Commissioner of Police, north Delhi. But Kumar didn’t give up easily.

“As soon as they snatched his bag, Kumar pounced on the three men,” said Hooda.

Due to his resistance, he was shot multiple times in his stomach. “The three dumped their bike and attempted to flee in a tempo which was passing by, but Kumar held on to one of them,” added Hooda.

A passerby made a PCR complaint and two of the three assailants were apprehended, police said. Kumar was rushed to the AIIMS trauma centre and is out of danger.

“He is a very brave man. I laud him for refusing to give up in the face of imminent death,” said Hooda.
