The trial runs began this morning from Lakshmi Nagar station and the train travelled up to Preet Vihar station.

DMRC officials said the trains will run up to Preet Vihar for some days before the trial runs are extended till the Anand Vihar station.

They said today's trial runs were successful.

The section, once opened, is expected to draw huge crowds given the number of people who depend on private mode of transport to reach the national capital.

With Anand Vihar located on the border of Uttar Pradesh, people from that state will also use the Metro to come to Delhi.

Though DMRC projects that over 1 lakh will join the new age transport system by 2011, it is expected to be much higher with Noida line being an example.

The stretch, which will be integrated with the newly-constructed railway terminal, is scheduled to be opened to the public by the end of this month.

However, DMRC officials say the inauguration of the line is subject to the availability of trains.
