And this because they had refused to give into the demands of a couple of neighbourhood hooligans.

The young women were travelling in a rickshaw to their Zakir Nagar home from their boutique at Gaffar Manzil, Okhla at around 8:30 pm on Wednesday night.

Both areas are in south Delhi and separated by a kilometre.

Just a few meters from their residence, they were intercepted by a biker and his pillion who threw acid on their faces.

“The accused Afroz was standing nearby carrying a jug full of acid. He hurled acid on them,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak with media.

“Zaveria told the police that Afroz was stalking her for past one month. A day before Eid he had proposed her for marry but she refused,” added the officer.

“Afroz then had threatened her with dire consequence and used to stalk her on way everyday. We have picked up Afroz from his house in Zakir Nagar and taken him to the hospital where Zaveria identified him and he was arrested,” added the officer.
