A mango festival, a tree plantation drive and lunch sessions are some of the unique traditions a few Delhi University colleges follow every year to mark the beginning of the new academic session.

On Wednesday, too, these colleges welcomed the students and teachers in their own special way.

Hansraj College, for instance, has a 20 year old tradition of organising a mango festival for teachers every year. On Wednesday, the teachers of the college were served different varieties of mangoes along with other fruits and fruit milkshakes. “This is done for an auspicious beginning to the session and teachers too have a little fun before they begin teaching in the new session,” said Hansraj College principal V K Kwatra.

At Lady Shri Ram College each new student plants a tree on day one of their college life symbolising growth and nurturing. “It’s long standing tradition of the college and we have had alumnae coming back and checking on the trees they had planted,” said Kanika Khandelwal, media co ordinator, Lady Shri Ram College.

St Stephen’s organises a high tea and an informal interaction between the parents of the hostellers and the principal. Shri Ram College of Commerce on the other hand organised a lunch for 1,300 people including the students who had taken admission and their parents.
