"His condition is stable. He is making progress," Dr Sampath Kumar, head of cardiac thoracic vascular sciences department of AIIMS, said.

Scotching rumours about the health of the 84-year-old former Prime Minister, Kumar said, "his condition has not deteriorated. He has no fever".

Vajpayee was admitted to AIIMS on Tuesday with complaints of fever and chest congestion. Doctors later found that he was suffering from pneumonia.

On Saturday, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee separately visited AIIMS to enquire about the health of the BJP veteran.

Senior BJP leader LK Advani, who is in Nagpur, also spoke over the phone to doctors at the hospital.
