Walking for their rights
City-based NGOs and rights groups will hold a mass rally today to protest sexual assault.
A series of protests have taken place in recent past against the March 11 Gurgaon rape case. Now, a women group — called the Protests Against Sexual Assault (Citizen’s collective) — will hold a mass rally today, starting from Mandi House till ITO.

Dressed in red, they will shout slogans, holding placards to raise their voice against sexual assault of women in Delhi and NCR. “We organised this rally mainly to protest against sexual assault and against the indifferent attitude of police towards these issues,” says Rituparna Borah, a group member and rally organiser.

The rally will start around 11am and will see women from different feminist and human rights groups walk with a spoon and thali to make noise. “We don’t want it to be a quiet protest. So, we have asked supporters to bring in thalis and spoons,” says Borah.
Around 2000 women are expected to join the rally, the news of which was spread on Facebook and through printed pamphlets. “Apart from popularising the event on Facebook, our volunteers distributed pamphlets with all the details on the busy city roads and in Delhi University Campus,” says Borah.
The rally will also see a street play performance by the Asmita Theatre Group, which is known for presenting plays on social issues. “Theatre has been instrumental in providing momentum to many socio-political movements like the Jessica Lal case, domestic worker’s fight and more recently, safety of women in the city in relation to the recent Gurgaon Rape case,” says Arvind Gaur, the founder of the group.
