The redevelopment plan prepared by design firm REPL, submitted to MCD three months ago, envisages a better planned special area with proper parking, wider roads and safer homes. As areas like Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk and Sadar Paharganj are a mix of residential and commercial establishments, the strategy is to provide suitable framework for allowing mix-use activities.

MCD has divided special areas into five zones, which have been further split into wards with highest and lowest potential for commercial upscaling. The plan aims at increasing commercialisation of the area without dislocating the people. Not all trades, however, will be allowed.

As Chandni Chowk and Shahjahanabad have several historical monuments, the plan also includes restoration and preservation. "There are abundant possibilities for the development of old Delhi areas on account of excellent connectivity, good location, presence of vacant land and high tourist activity,” said Pradeep Misra, Founder Director of REPL.

In August this year, MCD laid the foundation for the Chandni Chowk redevelopment plan for easing traffic and clearing the mesh of overhead cables.
