Twenty four-year-old Gaurav Saxena had taken an off from work on Thursday to take his nine-month-old daughter to Chhatarpur temple for her mundan. By mid-afternoon, his wife was undergoing medical treatment, while Saxena and his daughter’s corpses were being preserved at a city hospital.

A rogue private bus brought to an end their lives. Saxena, who lived in Ghaziabad’s Vijay Nagar, was on his motorcycle with his wife Sonu (24) and daughter Mannat. He was on the Nizamuddin flyover when a Whiteline bus hit his motorbike from behind, police and eyewitnesses said.

“Saxena’s motorcycle skidded due to the rain. The bus slowed down but the rear wheel had already run over Saxena’s chest. He died on the spot,” said Santosh Gupta, who was on his motorcycle just behind the victims. Saxena’s daughter died at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

Saxena’s wife Sonu was admitted at Holy Family Hospital with injuries, but was out of danger, police said. Her family had not told her about the deaths till evening.

“She is shocked and we just cannot break the news,” said M. Azeem, Sonu’s father. Her mother and sisters were inconsolable. Saxena was a sales executive at garment shop in Shipra Mall, Indirapuram. He could have escaped his fate had he heeded his colleagues’ advice. “We are having an audit at the store and are quite busy. Saxena had asked for a leave but we told him to be on duty on Thursday but he insisted,” said one of Saxena’s colleagues waiting outside the Holy Family Hospital.

The police has meanwhile impounded the private bus. “The driver is absconding and a case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence has been registered,” said a police officer.
