Women’s security: DUSU leaders meet police chief

Upset after the fourth gang rape incident in less than a fortnight in outer Delhi’s Sultanpuri area on Saturday, a group of student representatives from various off campus colleges met Delhi Police Commissioner BK Gupta on Tuesday.

“We appreciate the Delhi Police’s efforts to make north campus safe during the day but what about off campus colleges located away from the vice chancellor’s office?” asked Delhi University Student’s Union (DUSU, ) vice president Priya Dabas who lead the group.

To make North Campus safer for women, Delhi Police has set-up special gender help desks and increased the deployment of women police officers.

However, the commissioner’s new initiative fell flat as far as devising similar security measures for thousands of women students who either study in off campus colleges and especially for those who study in these colleges during the evening shift.

“Colleges such as Daulat Ram, Laxmi Bai, Aditi Mahavidyalaya and SPM College function till late in the evening. Students in these colleges have to deal not only with lack of security prevalent in campus per se but also with the lack of security after dark,” Dabas said.

Police Commissioner BK Gupta said, “I heard the representatives. We will implement their suggestions soon.”
