“The decision to introduce artificial intelligence as a skill subject was taken at a recent meeting of the board’s governing body. It was decided that the subject would be introduced from classes 8, 9 and 10 as a skill subject,” a member of the board’s governing body said adding that it would be the optional 6th subject.

Artificial intelligence is the ability of a machine to think, learn and perform tasks such as visual perception, speech recognition and decision-making skills and is being widely recognised as the power that will fuel the future global digital economy.

“AI in the past few years has gained geo-strategic importance and many countries are striving hard to stay ahead with their policy initiatives to get their nation ready,” the circular reads.

India’s own AI strategy identifies it as an opportunity and solution provider for inclusive economic growth and social development. It also identifies the importance of skill-based education (as opposed to knowledge intensive education) and the value of project related work in order to “effectively harness the potential of AI in a sustainable manner” and to make India’s next generation ‘AI ready’, according to the circular.

Similarly over the last few decades, there has been an upsurge in the prevalence of yoga and early childhood education. Yoga will teach a way of living that aims towards a healthy mind in a healthy body whereas early childhood education will teach children of nursery and kindergarten classes happy education, the circular reads.

Considering the demand of schools supplemented by various reports that projected the huge requirement of yoga professionals and early childhood educators, the board has decided to introduce the same as an elective subject at senior secondary level from this session.

Beside these new programmes, the board is already offering various skill subjects at secondary and senior secondary level to upgrade the proficiency of students so that they can make nuanced career decisions.

At secondary level, a skill subject may be offered as additional sixth subject along with the existing five compulsory subjects. If any student fails in any one of the three elective subjects (i.e. science, mathematics and social science), then it will be replaced by the skill subject (offered as a 6th subject) and result of Class X will be computed based on best five subjects. However, if a candidate desires to reappear in the failed subject, he/she may appear along with the compartment examination.

Similarly, at senior secondary level, the board would appreciate, if a school offers at least one or more skill based subject as elective subject out of the 42 subjects.

According to the circular, the board will provide necessary support and guidance towards training and capacity building of teachers and other aspects for the successful implementation of skill subjects from time to time.
