IISc continues to be top Indian institute in Asian varsity ranking
Overall, 49 Indian institutions have made it to the list, up from 42 last year, making it the third most-represented nation.
The Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, has retained its top spot among Indian institutions in the latest ranking of Asian universities topped by Tsinghua University of China, the Times Higher Education (THE) said on Thursday.
THE’s Asia University Rankings 2019 shows mixed performance by Indian institutes, with significant rises and falls for individual institutions. The IISc remains in the 29th place, while the Indian Institute of Technology, Indore, has joined the list at the 50th spot.
Five entrants from India are among the top 20 newcomers, which is more than any other country, except Japan, which also has five.
Overall, 49 Indian institutions have made it to the list, up from 42 last year, making it the third most-represented nation.
“China is once again one of the main success stories of the Asia University Rankings, reflecting the country’s large and sustained investment in the sector over many years,” said Phil Baty of THE.
“Leading universities in Japan and South Korea have made significant gains, many institutions in Malaysia are soaring up the list and there are pockets of excellence in India and Indonesia”.
Tsinghua University’s number one spot is attributed to a large boost in its score for teaching environment and significant rise in its scores for citation impact and international outlook. It has replaced the National University of Singapore, which led the table since 2016 and has now dropped to the second spot.
