Preoccupied with exam mess, Mumbai university fails to apply for NAAC ratings

The University of Mumbai (MU), preoccupied with the mess in its examination department, has once again missed the deadline to apply afresh for ratings under the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The university’s decision to assess students’ exam papers online has led to delays in declaration of results.
The university will now have to wait until the next round towards the end of the year to be eligible for accreditation.
“MU has been functioning without proper accreditation from the University Grants Commission (UGC) since April this year. Looks like due to the result mess, officials at the varsity have not managed to find time to even reapply for accreditation,” said the principal of a college, on conditions of anonymity.
MU was last accredited by NAAC in April 2012, receiving ‘A’ grade with the same being applicable till March 31, 2017. Usually all UGC affiliated universities and institutes reapply to continue their affiliations even before the previous affiliation lapses. In case of MU, the re-application process was not started even five months after the earlier affiliation lapsed.
Earlier this year the UGC had made it very clear that all institutes and universities looking for applying for accreditation need to apply for the same before March 31, or wait till the commission issues new guidelines for the process. After failing to prepare an application for re-accreditation in March, MU now plans to send in its application in November this year.
“We are in the process of putting together the application and the same will be submitted to UGC by November,” an MU official said.
MU has been struggling to declare the results of the exams for its last semester after it decided to assess answer papers online. More than three months after the on-screen marking (OSM) assessment of answer scripts of lakhs of students began, the university has not been able to announce the results of many courses.
