As the counting of votes progressed on Thursday, the results to the month-long Assembly elections in five states became clearer, setting a gloomy tone for several political heavyweights, including two incumbent chief ministers and five former state heads, who lost the electoral battle from their respective seats. The Election Commission will declare the final results in all constituencies in the next few hours.

Here's a list of current and former chief ministers who are losing the election this time:

Punjab

  • Charanjit Singh Channi
  • Parkash Singh Badal
  • Amarinder Singh
  • Rajinder Kaur Bhattal

While celebrations have begun for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is set to sweep the polls with a landslide victory, the incumbent Congress lost one of the last remaining states where it was in power. CM Channi lost the poll battle from both Bhadaur and Chamkaur Sahib seats.

Former Punjab chief ministers Parkash Singh Badal, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Amarinder Singh have also lost the battle from their respective pocket boroughs.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president and former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal also lost the election to his AAP rival from Jalalabad.

Uttarakhand

  • Pushkar Singh Dhami
  • Harish Singh Rawat

In the hill state of Uttarakhand, the BJP is sure of winning the polls but incumbent chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was defeated by 6,951 votes to Congress' Bhuwan Kapri.

At the same time, Congress candidate and former chief minister Harish Rawat lost the poll battle against BJP's Mohan Singh Bisht.

Goa

  • Churchill Alemao

In Goa, former chief minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) nominee Churchill Alemao lost the polls from Benaulim this time to his AAP counterpart.

Voting in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab and Manipur took place in February-March and the BJP has emerged as the strongest party, on course to form the government in four of the five states.
