Ice hockey isn’t a very popular sport in India. And when Akshay Kumar, producer of Speedy Singhs (a film based on ice hockey), found out that India has an official ice-hockey team, he was both surprised and elated.

“Not many of us actually knew that India has an ice hockey team. But now, we are sure that it will help us promote the sport through our film. Everyone involved with Speedy Singhs feel that it’s a very interesting sport,” says the film’s official spokesperson.

Akshay’s production venture is based on ice hockey, Canada’s national sport. And with the release, the actor hopes to promote the game in India. He was also very glad to hear that there’s also an ice hockey ring in New Delhi where matches are played regularly.

Based in Toronto, the film is about young Rajveer, an aspiring ice hockey player who is struggling to deal with his Indo-Canadian traditions. The film is titled Breakaway for the international market and Speedy Singhs for India. In fact, it was Akshay who came up with the title to include his favourite ‘Singh’ in the title.

Speedy Singhs, which will premiere at the forthcoming Toronto Film Festival, will be launched with much fanfare in Canada.

Akshay is planning to recreate a Punjabi-styled fair at the entrance of the Indian section at the film festival as well. And for the same, a group of musicians have also been taken to Toronto.

Though Akshay doesn’t feature in the film, he stars in the video of Shera Di Kaum… along with American rapper Ludacris, who he roped in for the song that has been composed by the Bhangra band RDB.
