Pakistani singer-actor Ali Zafar, who made his Bollywood debut with Tere Bin Laden last week, was kidnapped in his hometown, Lahore, over two years ago, by people suspected to be members of the militant group that the film takes a dig at.

Zafar, who was at dinner with his then-fiancée, Aisha, was kidnapped at gunpoint and released when his family parted with Rs 2.5 million. The incident went unnoticed, as he did not speak to the media about it.

In a TV interview months later, Zafar said that the kidnapper claimed he wouldn’t harm his fiancée. “Hamare ghar mein bhi maan-behnen hain (Even we have mother and sister at home),” said the kidnapper.

Tere Bin Laden has not been cleared for exhibition in Pakistan due to its content. The film is a comedy about an ambitious reporter from Karachi who is desperate to migrate to the US.

Zafar wrote on his Facebook page: “Have put an appeal to the PM and the President. Hoping they would understand the nature of the humour and let the people of Pakistan watch this hilarious flick.”

He also urged the audiences to wait for the release of the film. “Everyone in Pakistan, please don’t download or watch the pirated version. I have tried very hard to bring it to Pakistan. Just hold on till this weekend!”
