Believing in the auspiciousness of the day, a large number of couples are planning to opt for a Caesarean surgery, or C-section, to have their babies on the first day of 2012.

Dr Archana Dhawan Bajaj, gynaecologist, Nurture Clinic, says, “I have 12 women lined up to deliver on 01.01.12. They are due in mid-January but want to deliver on the first day of 2012.”

Dr Veena Bhat, gynaecologist, Artemis Health Institute, says, “The first day of any year is considered very auspicious. It’s also a fancy birthday. I’ve eight patients who’ll deliver on January 1.”

While some want a c-sec, other deliveries will take place through the induction of labour. Fertility specialists are also flooded with requests for embryo transfer on the date.

“Women going through IVF (in-vitro fertility treatment) want an embryo transfer on Jan 1. I have 40 such requests,” says Dr Kaberi Banerjee, IVF expert, Max Health Care.

Anubha Gupta, numerologist, says babies born on the first day of the year are very lucky “Those born on Jan 1 will be visionaries. That’s why we recommend the date.” But tarot reader Manisha Kaushik warns that the date may not suit everyone.

“One should not go for it just because everyone else is doing it,” she says.
