Brad Pitt has called fiancee Angelina Jolie's decision to undergo a double mastectomy as absolutely heroic after she was told she had a significantly increased chance of developing breast cancer.

The, Salt, star revealed that she'd had an operation to remove her breasts in a piece she'd written in a US newspaper.

And now Pitt has released a statement praising Jolie's courage and looking to their future, the Mirror reported.

"Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as so many others like her, absolutely heroic," he told the Evening Standard.

Jolie praised Pitt for nothing but loving and supportive, as she underwent treatment, and was there for every minute of the surgeries of her preventive double mastectomy.

The actress is healthy and made the decision to undergo the procedure after discovering she carries the BRCA1 cancer gene.
