For a nation that does not really celebrate Christmas, the Japanese capital is filled with some big surprises this season. Tokyo's Omotesando district is lit up with 900,000 light-emitting diodes strung through the 153 trees on the 1-km long street. Last year saw only 630,000 lights here. This year, the festival coincides with the 90th anniversary of the Meiji Shrine in the area, which makes the town shine brighter.
