Hollywood heartthrob Gerard Butler has begun his New Year with a piece of good news. A California judge has dismissed a misdemeanour battery charge filed against him in 2008.

The Scottish actor was charged with abuse after a bust-up with a paparazzo outside the premiere party for Guy Ritchie film RocknRolla on 7 October 2008.

The actor’s representatives insisted the photographer was stalking the star, almost killing a pedestrian as he chased the actor through Hollywood, reported Daily Express online.

The charge was dismissed at a hearing on Tuesday after the actor completed community service. Butler, who has starred in films such as 300 and P.S. I Love You, faced up to six months in jail if convicted.
