“Bollywood stars can be role models. They should stand up and do something for the earth and not just pose for photographs or take part in TV shows,” says Ravi Kalra of The Earth Saviours Foundations. Sujit Kumar Singh of Centre for Science and Environment agrees. “If stars do it, the cause will spread like wildfire.”

Even the customary lip service was dismal, with only actors Akshay Kumar and Ashmit Patel, and singer Kailash Kher tweeting about the cause till the time of going to press. Some had an explanation.

“I think it’s not just about a particular day, it’s a gradual process,” said actor Ayushman Khurana. “I save on air-conditioning at home. I don’t waste electricity and water. These small things go a long way,” said actor Abhay Deol. Fans, too, didn’t seem to agree with the NGOs. “Actors like Rahul Bose, Priyanka Chopra, Gul Panag have always supported the cause,” said Ria De, 21.
