On India’s 63rd Independence Day, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan wants us to brush up on Mahatma Gandhi. “We should all return to the teachings of Gandhi,” says Aamir, who was in town to promote his latest production, Peepli Live. “Every year, when I wake up on August 15 morning, my first thought is about our country. I feel that in our society there is a mix of things happening — some positive and encouraging stuff.”

Aamir, who has just recovered from a bout of viral, says he chose not to have a traditional premiere for the film because it would have been too tiring. Surrounded by tri-colour baloons and kites in his hotel room, he says, “A premeire is very difficult to organise and is really tiring to do. Though I received calls and messages from friends and colleagues asking, ‘Yaar film kab dikha re ho’. So I held private screenings for them. It was so much more relaxed!” he says.
