How to reduce your carbon footprint
Don’t keep upgrading your mobile phone
On an average, people replace their handsets every 18 months. One discarded mobile phone battery contains enough cadmium to contaminate 6,00,000 litres of water. The plastic covers of mobile phones last for hundreds of years in landfills.
Switch off the computer monitor when not in use
You can laser print 800 pages with the energy you waste by leaving the monitor on overnight.
Car pool or use public transport
Don’t add to the over 40 crorecars and light trucks on the world’s roads today.
You can save fuel simply by not accelerating or braking too harshly and switching off the engine at a red light.
Eat fresh food
Over half of the 45,000 tonnes of plastic waste dumped in oceans each year comes from packaging. It’s always better to eat fresh, unpacked food.
Use energy-saving lamps
Replace burned-out bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLS). These last ten times longer than traditional bulbs and use 30% less electricity.
Recycle and reuse paper
Every year, we throw two trees worth of paper. Although paper is bio-degradable, waste paper releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas, as it decomposes.
Each tonne of recycled paper can save 17 trees.
Don’t waste water
A dripping tap can waste up to 5-10 litres of water a day. Get leaky taps fixed and don’t leave them running while brushing your teeth or shaving.
e-bills and paper usage
In one year, by switching from paper to electronic billing, statements, and payments, the average American household would...
Save 3kg of paper
Avoid releasing 238 litres of wastewater into the environment
Avoid using 17 litres of petrol to mail paper items
Avoid producing 78 kg of greenhouse gas emissions-the equivalent of:
—The emissions avoided by not driving 272 km.
—The emissions avoided by not consuming 33 litres of petrol
—Planting 2 tree seedlings and allowing them to grow for 10 years
—Preserving 24 square feet of forestland
What’s your Carbon footprint?
What does a ton of CO2 look like?
A ton of CO2 is enough to fill a 27 x 27 x 27 foot room.
Calculate your footprint
1.46 tons of CO2
Driving a small motorcycle (upto 125 cc) 20,000 kms a year
0.43 tons of CO2
Driving a medium petrol car (1.4-2L) 20,000 kms a year
1.54 tons of CO2
Flying Delhi-London-Delhi (13,422 kms)
0.14 tons of CO2
Train journey Delhi-Mumbai- Delhi (2,814 kms)
Do your bit
A more efficient car, which gives 2 km more per litre of fuel, saves 1.8 tons of CO2 released into the atmosphere.
Using a 3-star, energy efficient air conditioner instead of an ordinary a/c reduces your carbon emissions by 0.5 tons and a 3-star refrigerator reduces 0.4 metric tons of carbon dioxide a year.
Setting your a/c temperature just at 24º celsius instead of 22 avoids 232.45 kg of CO2 emitted per year.
Remembering to switch off your TV, and not just leaving it on standby reduces your carbon emissions by 105.12 kg of CO2.
