Friends have rallied round the former footballer who has moved out of the home he shared with Sue, the mother of their two grown-up sons.
The 62-year-old, former Nottingham Forest and Derby star, has been plagued by a gambling habit in the past.
“It’s a desperately sad situation and Peter is heartbroken the marriage has come to an end,” the Daily Mail quoted a friend as telling the Sunday Mirror.
Shilton had a glittering career winning a record 125 England caps and lifting the then European Cup, but off the field, the couple had problems.
“They have been through so much so everyone thought they’d be together for ever. She really has been a rock to him,” the friend said.
A spokesman for him said that the couple agreed to a trial separation after drifting apart. “They had a long and happy marriage together with two wonderful sons and four precious grandchildren.”
“There is no third party and no other trigger for the split. Sadly, it’s just one of those things,” the spokesman added.
