Unlike his father, actor Vinod Khanna or brother Akshaye Khanna, Rahul came into the entertainment scene as a VJ on MTV Asia and made an unconventional debut on the big screen with Deepa Mehta’s Earth. With good reviews and awards in his kitty, he didn’t jump on the Bollywood bandwagon but experimented with cinema, theatre and advertising. Now, with the industry opening up to 'different’ cinema, Rahul feels his time is just beginning.
One word that describes you best?
A tune you can’t get out your head?
Annie Lennox’s cover of A Whiter Shade of Pale
Which superhero would you like to be and why?
Superman, of course. The pros: the ability to fly and Lois Lane. The downside: having to wear one’s underwear over one’s pants
Do you love Luv Storys?
Alas, I am not much of a romantic. I prefer a racy crime thriller.
The last movie that made you cry?
Cinema Paradiso always makes me cry no matter how many times I watch it.
What makes you feel sexy?
Diana Krall’s music.
You get high on...
Great food and witty conversation.
If you could have chosen your own name, what would you have chosen?
Something a little more unusual than my current one, which is like the ‘John’ of India.
Choose: Air India or Indian Railways…
Air India. The warmth of the crew is unmatched. Sadly, the airline’s operations don’t match up to the standards of their staff’s hospitality.
The last time you rode on a bus?
A few days ago. From the airplane to the terminal. And speaking of buses, thanks to jet lag and all the flight delays these days, I probably also looked like the back of one that day.
Earth’s crowded and chock full of trash. Choose another planet?
I’ve always had some sort of connection to the moon. Plus, it’s close enough that I could come back to visit friends and family often. (But, as a lunar resident, would I then technically be a Loony?)
If you could have a star perform at your wedding, who would it be and why?
Michael Buble. His music has that old-school swing style, so everyone of all age groups would be on the dance floor and since most of his songs are all old big-band standards, everyone would know all the words.
You are late for work and all the roads are jammed. Choose a mode of transport: a cycle, a horse or a skateboard. Why?
A Cycle, its eco- friendly and a great workout
What is the weirdest thing that ever went into your mouth?
Cigarettes. I am allergic to tobacco, so these were herbal – but they were still disgusting
one place where you would like to be lost for a month?
I have never been to Paris. I would love to explore it
