‘Harry Potter’ author JK Rowling has been given planning permission to demolish a 1 million dollar house next door to her mansion, to make a renaissance-style garden complete with a greenhouse.
There have been no formal objections from conservation bodies to the demolition of the 1970s home in a wealthy suburb of Edinburgh, reports the Telegraph.
The Cockburn Association, one of the world’s oldest architectural conservation bodies, has decided not to lodge an objection with the Edinburgh City Council after considering the plans.
Marion Williams, director of the 140-year-old watchdog, said it did not condemn the project as it “goes some way towards restoring an original garden plot”.
“However, we note the loss of a perfectly adequate and functional recently constructed dwelling from the city’s housing stock and we regret and question the sustainability aspects of this demolition,” she said.
John Bury, Edinburgh council’s head of planning, said her application would “enhance the character and appearance” of the mansion.
“The principle of demolition is, in this instance, acceptable. The land will accommodate a designed formal garden ground, part of which will form new amenity space at the entrance to the remainder of the housing estate,” Bury added.
The author also wants to build a summerhouse that bears a striking resemblance to the stone hut inhabited by Hagrid, the giant groundsman from her novels.
