The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi plans to celebrate its golden jubilee this year with a bang. With a budget of R1 crore, appearances by Bollywood A-listers and performances by the coolest bands, the institute’s annual fest — Rendezvous 2010 — is set to be the biggest the Capital has seen.
The 32-year-old festival, to be held from October 21-24, will see the participation of more than 400 colleges. Actors Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone will lend star power to Pronite, a musical event, which has in the past seen performances by singers Kailash Kher and Mohit Chauhan. Actor Anushka Sharma and chess champion Tania Sachdev will attend the fest.
“On infrastructure alone, we have spent around Rs25 lakh, and the total cash expenditure is around Rs70 lakh, but if you include the prizes and vouchers, it goes to over a crore.” says Sayan Haldar, general secretary, Rendezvous 2010. “This is going to be the biggest festival IIT Delhi has ever had. Everything is bigger this time — from the budget to the celebrities and even the prize money. The budget is around Rs70-72 lakh, which has increased by around 70% as compared to last year’s figures,” says Karan Gupta, festival coordinator.
Performers from six countries will rock the house at Confluence, the festival’s international music festival. Maria Anadon, jazz quartet from Portugal; Mynta, a fusion band from Sweden; Rockfour, a psychedelic rock band from Israel; DJ Destro from Spain; a violinist trio from Czech Republic; and Francesca Cassio and Simone Schiru from Italy are among the performers.
While the curtains closed at 11pm every night last year, this time, it will be an all-night affair, with more activities, such as gaming and live karaoke. The open-air theatre acts, to be held every night, are expected to have an audience of 9,000. “This year, the prelims for Blitzkrieg (the renowned rock show) will be held in four cities — Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata and Mumbai, and the winners will participate at the fest. Parikrama will be opening the show”, says Haldar.
