While some unabashedly called her an Arab, refusing to acknowledge her as an American, others just shook their heads in disbelief.

Pookie tweeted, "And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic."

Jessica Ayres sure didn't know what she was saying when she tweeted, "I swear I'm not racist but this is America."

"Miss New York is an Indian.. With all do respect, this is America," Savannah Dale echoed her thoughts.

Some went to the extent of associating her with al Qaeda and calling her a terrorist on social media.

De La Rutherford wrote, "Congratulations al Qaeda. Our Miss America is one of you."

Others cracked the age old 7-11 Indian-American joke. CHEEZ-IT: "Miss America? You mean Miss 7-11."

But the most offensive and insensitive tweets would have to be Luke Brasili's. "9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets miss America?"

The judges decision must be commended despite the clear prevalence of racism.

Do you think a "more American" woman ought to have won? Do you think Nina Davaluri would have won a pageant in India? Leave your thoughts in comments.
