Six packs, yoga, and slim and sexy senior actresses — the past year was high on fitness.
1 Celebrity Yogis: Pop princess Madonna became the poster girl for yoga in Hollywood. The singer inspired actors, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, Rita Wilson, Nicholas Cage and Naomi Watts to take it up. Closer home, actresses Kareena Kapoor and Shilpa Shetty swore by power yoga. Chhote nawab Saif Ali Khan, too, joined the bandwagon.
2 Bollywood Dance workout: From NRI weddings and desi family functions, Bollywood Dancing became an integral part of the morning routines for young foreigners, who were thumping and grinding to Hindi numbers to stay in shape. Foreign multinationals like Oracle and Cisco, too, introduced Bollywood Dancing classes at their in-house fitness centers.
3 Six pack abs: What started with Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shati Om (2007) and Aamir Khan in Ghajini (2008) continues to be a rage even today. The six-pack abs had a steady stream of followers through 2009. And though some stars initially claimed to be getting the impossible eight-packs, eventually Sanjay Dutt, Shahid Kapur and Emraan Hashmi had to settle for six-pack abs.
4 Baba Ramdev: Though Baba Ramdev irked Bollywood with his comments on homosexuality and about the ‘loose morals of B’town actresses’, his eight pranayams for healthy living captured the international imagination. He came into the limelight of the international media when he acquired a £2 million Scottish island to start a specialised ‘healing center’.
5 Slim and sexy comebacks: Rani Mukherji took to monkey-jumping and yoga, and her svelte new avatar in Dil Bole Haddipa had fans salivating. Former Miss Universe, Sushmita Sen, got tongues wagging when she shed a lot of weight and returned in a super-glam new look to walk the ramp in Delhi earlier this year.
