What’s the big deal?

When Deepika Padukone wore the same dress at two different TV shows recently, many thought she has committed one of the cardinal sins of fashion. But what the actress did was make a point that it’s stupid to not wear a flattering dress again and again, only because some think that celebrities ought not to repeat their outfits.

“So what?” asked Deepika when HT City asked her the reason behind the encore. “I like the outfits that I wear, so I don’t mind repeating them once in a while. In fact, I have a pair of sandals that I particularly like; they match with most things. “And, why not?” she said.

Not the only one

And she’s not alone when it comes to the ‘like it-will flaunt it again’ sentiment. Actress Katrina Kaif wore the same red satin gown for two award ceremonies last year, and she was also spotted wearing the same pink skirt at different public events. Actress Celina Jaitly has been seen wearing the same salmon pink shoes, while actress Neetu Chandra repeated her blue gown in March at two different events. Although actresses like Kangana Ranaut, Minissha Lamba and Sherlyn Chopra have, in the past, made loud statements about never making the ‘blunder’ of repeating dresses, many others fail to see what the big deal is.deepikapadukone

Silly expectations
“How can you expect someone to wear new stuff all the time? I repeat stuff, not just shoes, bags and accessories, even clothes,” says style icon Malaika Arora Khan.

For actress Gul Panag, as long as dresses are not repeated at a public event, it’s completely okay. “I am very comfortable repeating shoes and bags. And even an outfit, provided it is not on two consecutive public appearances. “I fail to see the logic behind celebs don’t repeating stuff. Celebrities are humans after all. Even they can have their favourites,” she said.

For stylists, this defiance of actresses heralds a new trend. “Stars don’t care about the no-repeat rule anymore. For various reasons -may be they consider a particular dress lucky or it’s a favourite. In some cases, specially during film promotions, they don’t get enough time to decide their look, so such things happen. But they’re cool with it,” says stylist Ranjunee Chakma.

“If the look has been repeated after a while and is accessorised differently, why not!” seconds stylist Edward Lalrempuiea.
