I love the winters. These days in particular, I enjoy it even more. Having a chill in the Mumbai air is not a phenomenon Mumbai-ites are used to! These days it’s colder than I’ve ever experienced in Mumbai and it reminds me of the fact that there’s global warming and maybe, that’s why it’s getting colder every year!

But that aside, I love this season. I love the fact that people all over the globe can get into their sweaters, scarves, trench coats, ear muffs, boots and mufflers. Winter is a season that you can dress up in! From New York to London to New Delhi to Mumbai … everyone’s in their best winter wear.

manish malhotraThe beautiful winter colours of deep red, royal blue and regal green add to the resplendent glory and texture that winter wear comes with. Blacks have always dominated the international fashion scene in the winter but now people are beginning to experiment with Greys and beiges. I like that. And I also feel that the Asian influence of wearing slightly brighter colours like purples in the winter is slowly catching on in the west.

A tryst with the cold is not unfamiliar to me. I was recently shooting with Kareena and Imran in Las Vegas for Stand By Me. It reminded me of the time I was shooting with Kareena at Hyde Park for K3G for a song sequence. She had to look all chirpy despite the chattering teeth and freezing cold! Needless to say she had to look glamourous and did amazing! When shooting with Shah Rukh and Aishwarya for Mohabattein, we were shooting in the freezing sub zero temperatures of Switzerland. Aishwarya had to wear a beautiful Chantilly net saree in the snow and to top it all, a beautiful smile to go with it! I don’t know how the Bollywood actors do it but they do it and they do it with style!

While shooting with Rani for KANK in New York in the middle of the winter season. She had to wear a red, net Sari . She had to look romantic, sensuous and beautiful. It was so cold and she had a rain shot! Luckily, the production organised for hot water as “rain” — nevertheless, she was so cold that I had nothing but pure admiration for the way she pulled it off!

Last year, at around this time, I was in New York shooting for Anjaana Anjaani. It was so bitterly cold and it was snowing so much that I had to arrange for the thickest pair of tights possible for Priyanka. That’s the only way she could’ve worn those short skirts she is wearing in the film. I added gloves and made sure I added different kinds of ear muffs to the look. I made sure that ear muffs were an integral part of her look in the movie. To say she looked fabulous would be blowing my own trumpet but let’s admit it — she did! :)

During my recent visit to New York, I saw high fashion on the streets with boots and jackets and long coats. It’s such a pleasure to see people taking pride in their winter wear and staying stylish while they do it.

As i write this article, I look forward to my trip for the shooting of Rockstar. Time to see how the winter fashion bug has bitten the people of New Delhi.
