India will host its first Kids Fashion Week in Mumbai next month, and Asia’s youngest fashion designer, Prachi Badve, 13, is set to steal the thunder from biggies such as Rocky S. and Malini Ramani.

The Pune girl, who’ll showcase her collection at the event, to be held from January 17-19 at the Lalit Intercontinental, has already showcased at the Pune and Kolkata fashion weeks last year.

FashionPrachi designs for both adults and kids, and says her journey started when she was three. "Priyanka Chopra was crowned Miss World that year, and I loved her gown. When I was nine, I sketched the garment with my own additions and subtractions. My teachers called my mother and asked her to take me to a psychiatrist because I keep drawing dresses. They said that even if they ask me to draw something else, I draw a dress below that. My grades also dropped. My mother told me that if I do well, she would gift dresses designed by me to my friends."

That is how she had her first ramp show in front of her house, with her friends walking in her designs. “Many institutes then approached me for formal training. I am pursuing my diploma course in fashion designing in Pune.” Earlier this year, she also presented a sari to President Pratibha Patil, which she embroidered herself.

For those who dissuade her from the world of glamour and tell her to concentrate on studies instead, she says: “I don’t understand, when people can start singing and dancing at an early age, what’s wrong with designing?” And she makes sure everyone takes her seriously. “I stand on a stool and scream, ‘go for make-up, now do this’.”
