Anushka Sharma or Vidya Balan? Sabyasachi Mukherjee picks his favourite bride

Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who made headlines for his comment on women who don’t know how to wear saree, has caught our attention once again. This time for choosing who wore his bridal designs better between actors Anushka sharma and Vidya Balan. Here’s his verdict.
It’s no coincidence that some of Bollywood’s biggest celebrities choose to wear designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee for their wedding. When it comes to creating wedding ensembles coveted by Indian brides the world over, the renowned couturist is pretty much the undisputed champ. Even actor Anushka Sharma couldn’t resist his signature opulence, grandeur and femininity, and chose him to design a heavily embellished lehenga for her wedding with cricketer Virat Kohli in Tuscany, Italy, in December, 2017.

But when it came to choosing between his recent muse/fan, Anushka and another A-lister, actor Vidya Balan, for whose December 2012 wedding Sabyasachi reportedly designed more than a dozen hand-crafted silk sarees, Sabyasachi has a clear favourite.

Days after his remark that women who don’t know how to wear a saree should be ashamed of themselves made headlines, the designer is set to appear on BFFs With Vogue, a talk show on Colors Infinity. Sabyasachi, who has designed wedding outfits for actors, like Asin, Soha Ali Khan, Bipasha Basu and many others, said on the show that Anushka carried his wedding trousseau better than Vidya. He was speaking in a segment called Scary Spice, read a statement from the channel.

Like Anushka, who donned one drool-worthy Sabyasachi outfit after another for her extravagant wedding celebrations, Vidya too showed her soft spot for the Kolkata-based designer with a bridal wardrobe filled with bespoke Sabyasachi creations. But unlike Anushka, who chose a pale pink lehenga featuring a voluminous skirt with fairytale-esque embroidery and embellishments, Vidya kept it easy and elegant in a gold and red saree with temple jewellery from Amrapali, on her big day.

It’s obvious that Vidya loved dressing in the designer’s ensembles as much as he enjoyed styling her: Who can forget the much talked-about Golconda princess-inspired wardrobe that Sabyasachi styled for Vidya’s Cannes film festival appearances in 2013? The actor is now regularly spotted in other designer labels, like Raw Mango, Ritu Kumar, Anita Dongre, among others.
Over the years, almost every big actor has been spotted draped in trademark Sabyasachi creations with regal velvet sarees, intricate gold embellishment, and lehengas printed with the darkest of blooms. But when asked which celebrity he would like to dress, Sabyasachi said on the TV show that he wanted veteran actor Rekha to be his muse for a fashion show in 2018.
