From the sensual, beckoning stare of Tamara Moss who adorns the cover to the dedication that reads: “For everyone who has dared to dream and follow their inspiration,” placed against a sketch of a goth-style angel — this recently launched book starts fashionably.
Simply called Suneet Varma, with text by journalist Nishat Fatima and inputs by the designer himself, it provides an insight into the 25 years of Varma’s journey, interspersed with iconic images and interviews with fashion veterans.
“Growing up, books were very important in my life, primarily because of my father. So, literature has always been an innate part, as it lives longer than you do. I wanted to be relevant to many people, over a long period of time, and that’s exactly what a book does,” says Varma. From childhood charcoal sketches of Rekha and Dimple Kapadia to the fashion inspiration which came from his Peshawari grandmother — the book is a recollection of the rise of a veteran.
The pictures further recount a story that can perhaps be just told through images. Work of many photographers including that of late Prabuddha Dasgupta, who Suneet remembers as the “father of fashion photography,” cover the pages with models like Shyamolie Verma, Madhu Sapre, Milind Soman and Feroze Gujral.
“Milind, Madhu and I grew up together. We used to spend a lot of time, and sometimes it was productive, and sometimes we just used to have fun,” he reveals. From his Tantric Art Collection (1993) to Kamasutra (2011) — the images convey Suneet’s fashion evolution. “Completing 25 years is not often a synonym to the words, “just getting started,” but they are just that for Suneet Varma,” writes Fatima, and Varma agrees.
