Gurgaon: Eight days after being closed for repairs, Jharsa Road opens to traffic

Residents had reported commuting hassles while the Jharsa Road was rendered off-limits for eights days

Eight days after being rendered off-limits to commuters owing to a cave-in, Jharsa Road opened to traffic on Monday.

“Aside from a minor stretch which is likely to be repaired by Monday, the road has been opened for traffic movement as significant repair work has been completed. Gurgaon police will send out an update on the re-opening of Jharsa Road on social media,” Simardeep Singh, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), said.

While the slip road from Delhi-Gurgaon expressway towards Jharsa remained open for traffic movement, roads from Sector 15 towards Jharsa and Jharsa towards Sector 15 or Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway were cordoned off for repairs.

For regular commuters, the road’s opening came as a relief as it put an end to the delay caused by diversions.

“I work at the municipal corporation office in the Civil Lines area and the Jharsa Road offers a direct link from my residence to workplace. During these eight days when the road closed for repairs, I had to make a detour of nearly 4km than 1km that I normally travel. The re-opening of the road has not only reduced my travel but will also help me cut down on fuel cost,” Sonu Kumar, a resident of sector 39 said.

Although, nearly 250 km of city roads have been resurfaced by the Haryana government as part of ₹104 crore road repair project, the effort has done little to stop road cave-ins.

On April 24, commuters from New Delhi to Manesar took more than 30 minutes to clear Hero Honda Chowk after a portion of the road near the junction caved in. The cave-in was a direct fallout of a water pipeline developing leakages during its shifting to pave way for the construction of an underpass there.
