Gurgaon: Open garbage, poor sanitation worry Vijay Vihar residents

Residents of Vijay Vihar, on Silokhra Road in Sector 30, have lodged a complaint with the Municipal Corporation of Gururgram (MCG) regarding poor sanitation and open garbage pile in front of the housing societies. They alleged that despite several complaints, no action has been taken.

They said that a taxi stand on a nearby vacant plot has also emerged as a cause of much heartburn for them, as cab drivers often relieve themselves and take bath in the open and also play loud music at night, disturbing the ambience in the neighbourhood.

Residents said they met the MCG commissioner on several occasions and urged him to take action, but their pleas went unheard.

They said waste keeps piling up on the streets and municipal workers are rarely seen clearing the garbage. Serving an ultimatum on the authorities, they said that if the situation remains as it is, they will organise protests in a bid to step up pressure on them to act. They said that such is stench from the random littering and dumping of garbage near the housing societies that they find it difficult to step outdoors. With the cab drivers allegedly taking bath in the open, women, too, are wary of stepping out.

Residents of the oldest residential colony on Silokhra Road, spread across 5 acres, said they are opposed to the unauthorised taxi stand in the area. They said the plot on which taxis are parked is situated right opposite the housing colonies and women feel unsafe stepping out at night.

Monika Pal, a resident, “I have been living in this colony since 1991 and have rarely seen any sanitation work done here. Unauthorised taxi stands have come up on vacant plots and drivers are often seen bathing in the open. We feel unsafe stepping out at night.”

“We pay our taxes and have the right to demand basic sanitation. It is not too much to ask. All I want is an healthy environment for my children to grow up in. I hope the MCG will do what’s needed to be done to ensure the same,” Pal said.

“This colony has been rendered inhabitable due to open littering and dumping of garbage. The MCG seems to have turned a blind eye to our plight. A prime location in the heart of Gurgaon is being destroyed and the authorities simply don’t care,” Ashish Sood, another resident, said.

SS Rohilla, MCG spokesperson, said, “The issue has been brought to our notice and we will do what’s needed to ensure cleanliness in the area. Our sanitation officer has been informed about the problem and told to take necessary measures.”
