Integrated OTs to reduce human error

The two new integrated operating theatres (OT) at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) in Gurgaon can double up as a set for a sci-fi film.

Designed to optimise efficiency, space and on-the-spot decision-making, the OTs will lower the number of people who need to be physically present during the surgery, thus reducing risk of infection and human error.

“Everything is controlled by a voice-command console and surgeons don’t need external help or assistance. They can change the configuration of the system with the help of voice modulation system or touch screen,” says Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, director, gastrointestinal, minimal access and bariatric surgery, Fortis Memorial.

“An Integrated OR can connect to anyone around the world with the help of web link, enabling real time consultation across the globe,” says Dr Atul Mittal, director, ENT.

The new stem cell laboratory and Integrated OTs are the two unique features the hospital can boast of. “Stem cell therapy is an alternative to bone marrow transplant and is mainly done for leukemia and lymphoma. It helps in faster recovery, chances of death are less, the cost is low and the probability of side effects and infections is also low,” said Dr Vinod Raina, Director & HOD Medical Oncology and Haematology, Fortis memorial.
