Man arrested for raping minor cousin in Gurugram’s Basai village

The accused is the victim’s cousin, son of her maternal uncle, the police said.

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her cousin in Basai village, near Sector 9, police said on Sunday. According to the police, the incident took place in January, but the victim’s family did not lodge a complaint because of social stigma. Sub-inspector Rajbala, who is the investigating officer in the case, said the victim’s family approached the police after the accused, a 22-year-old man, stalked the girl when she was returning from school and allegedly misbehaved with her, on Saturday.

The victim’s medical examination was conducted on Saturday, which confirmed rape. A case was registered against the accused under Section 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at Women’s Sector 51 police station.

“The accused was arrested from Basai, on Saturday, and sent to judicial custody,” the investigating officer said.

“In her statement, she said that after the alleged rape incident in January, the accused had repeatedly tried to force himself upon her. Earlier, the family had decided against filing a complaint because of the social stigma, but after the recent transgression, they lodged a complaint,” said the station house officer of Women’s Sector 51 police station, Rajbala.
