In a typical case of cyber offence, the professional and personal life of a 28-year-old executive was wrecked after someone created his fake profiles on social networking sites and posted obscene pictures and comments.

However, after the cops solved the case following a year-long probe, the victim is now pleading with the police to close the case as the accused turned out to be his former colleague and best friend.
It all started last year when the victim’s friend created a fake profile of the victim on Facebook and other social networking sites to defame him. The confusion that ensued eventually forced him to quit his job and break up with his girlfriend, whom he was to marry soon.
“I was shocked to know that the person who created the fake id and spoilt my reputation was a close friend. I broke up with my girlfriend whom I was to get married to because of the whole episode. I didn’t expect this from him,” said Nikhil Joshi (name changed).
After a year-long technical investigation by Gurgaon police’s cyber crime cell, a case under the IT Act was registered at Sector 18 police station based on a complaint by Joshi in July 2012 that some unknown person/s had created his fake email id and an account on Facebook.
The cyber crime cell traced the culprit who happened to be the best friend of the victim and was his colleague for four years.
The accused had created the account from a cyber cafe at Hauz Khas in New Delhi, said the police.
“We have traced the culprit by tracking the IP address of the computer from where the account was created. The entire information has been shared with the victim,” inspector Suresh Kumar, in-charge, cyber crime cell.
