Man slits brother’s throat over whose turn it is to cook

Police said the two brothers, Balwant and Jai Singh, would often fight over petty issues. They had moved to Gurugram as welders and lived together in a rented house.

A man died after his younger brother allegedly slit his neck with a kitchen knife over an argument over whose turn it was to cook, police said on Sunday.

The accused Balwant Singh was arrested and a case of murder registered against him at the Sector 10 police station.

Police said the incident took place at the brothers’ residence in Saraswati Enclave on Sunday morning. Balwant and his brother Jai, the victim, started quarrelling over whose turn it was to cook, which escalated into a fight over a family dispute.

The brothers worked as welders in a private company in Gurugram. They had come to the city from Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh last year, and were living in a rented accommodation.

According to the police, the two often quarrelled over petty issues, with the underlining cause being a dispute over partiality and favouritism from different family members.

The two had also fought over a petty issue on Thursday and Jai had slapped Balwant multiple times, the police said.

“Around 8am, Jai asked his brother to cook, failing which he threatened to slap him. Balwant got furious and hit Jai with a stick on his head. After Jai collapsed on the ground, Balwant took a kitchen knife and slit his throat,” ASI Dinkar Yadav, the investigation officer, said.

Hearing the two brothers fight, the neighbours rushed inside, found Jai lying in a pool of blood and informed the police.

A case was subsequently registered on the complaint of Sonu Kumar, the landlord of the residence where the two lived.

Balwant was arrested from the spot and the police said that a post-mortem examination would be carried out on Monday after the family members reach Gurugram.
