The main accused, 42-year Basant Singh alias Kalu, had fired six shots with his licensed .32 mm revolver at Joginder Singh, 32, his father Satbir, 52, and grandfather Shivraj, 81.

The body of the deceased, Joginder Singh, was handed over to his family after post-mortem. Meanwhile, Satbir was referred to Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, but doctors say his chances of survival are bleak.

"Excessive bleeding was the cause of death. He had been assaulted with heavy objects too since there were multiple injury marks all over his body," said Dr Deepak Mathur, forensic expert at the Civil Hospital.

According to preliminary investigation, Basant Singh had attained pre-mature retirement from the Army six months ago. On Tuesday, when Singh got news of a clash in the village after a court hearing that left his relative, Manoj Kumar, injured, he took his licenced revolver, assembled villagers, and rushed to Sunrise Hospital in a fleet of SUVs.

"The CCTV footage helped identify all the accused. We have arrested three associates and detained others for questioning," said DCP (east) Maheshwar Dayal.

Along with two persons, identified as Dinesh and Raju, the police arrested 35-year-old Manoj Kumar alias Aloo who had been admitted to the Civil Hospital after he suffered injuries in a brawl at village Khandsa. The retired Army man remains at large.

The police have also interrogated several villagers, including the former sarpanch.
