Police bust gang involved in sale of fake mineral water
The city police on Tuesday arrested seven members of a gang that used to supply fake mineral water bottles of a well-known brand in Gurgaon and the NCR.
The police have also seized four tempos and hundreds of fake bottles from their possession. The accused will be produced in a court on Wednesday.
The gang members have been identified as Gajendra, Arvind, Babloo, Rajan, Vishwanath, Sonu and Narender. They were arrested from different parts of the city, including Islampur and Wazirabad.
The accused had been operating from Islampur village in Gurgaon for last past several months and were supplying the fake mineral water bottles to various areas in Delhi and the National capital Region (NCR), said Maheshwar Dayal, DCP (east), Gurgaon.
The accused used to reuse empty Aquafina bottles, manufactured by a reputed firm, and sold them as genuine products. The police have also seized hundreds of used bottles, Dayal added.
"We are investigating how the accused were running such a racket in the city. We also need to ascertain whether more persons were involved. The accused were found working in an open factory openly and seemed to have made no attempt to conceal their operations," said a police official.
The illegal factory was unearthed after the leading soft drinks company had lodged a complaint over supply of the fake mineral water bottles using their name.
The accused were booked under Section 420, 467 and 468 of the Indian Penal Code, apart from charges of copyrights infringement. A case has been registered at the Badshahpur police station.
